November 2023 Fae Friends
This month is when things tend to get kind of crazy for people. Emotions run high, everyone starts to get stressed out, it begins to get miserable in public. We’re going to bring our focus closer to home. This month I’m sending you a little cloche to make a present for the Good Folk, if you like- or just a cute little “oddities” style bottle (maybe even a spell?) if not. I was also out looking for supplies for the jewelry side of my life. I’m going to be making bindrunes and sigils from various plants, stones, and bones, and while I was out there, I thought- why not share? So here are some pieces of creosote. I think it’s interesting because the bark peels off as it dries, and the sun bleaches the wood so it’s very reminiscent of bone. I figured you can turn it into a wand, or just use it as a protective item in your altar space. I also found this amazing tea (caffeinated) that smells SO GOOD! If you ever got to try Lush’s You Snap the Whip body butter bar or Comforter bubble bar, you’ll recognize the gorgeous smell of blackcurrant. It’s a lovely sweet and dark smell and taste.
In the box:
Creosote “bone”
Mini glass cloche
Tiny ephemera to add to the cloche
Yellow candle
Fairy “dust” to dress the candle (herb and incense blend to sweeten them up and add warmth and happiness to your home)
Magnetic bookmark
Juniper rope incense
Blackcurrant tea
Fairy stone, aka Goddess stone or “Menilite opal” (It’s just calcite though)
Interesting tidbit about the fairy stones: I bought them from a little old English man off in the corner at one of the gem shows. He didn’t have a bunch of flashing lights and colors and a million sparkly crystals- he only had fairy stones, and a plain white tablecloth. He packed them in a paper bag and gave me a little info sheet he printed out. These came from James Bay Road in Quebec, Canada.
Now for the magic! Here’s what I plan on doing. Sift through this, if you need, to help form your own working. I’m going to write it as instructions because that’s easier for my brain, but I hope it’s obvious that you don’t have to anything like I do.
Brew the tea; you can do this while it steeps, and then finish up by sharing it as an offering.
Light the incense. Offer it to the elements and cardinal directions if you work with them and feel like it. Choose the items you’ll use for this and pass them through the smoke to consecrate them. I use E-6000 to glue things, but regular school glue would work too (and might actually be easier). I use a toothpick to apply the glue, and tweezers to move things around.
Start out by dry-placing everything to see where you want to put it. This gives you a better idea of how things fit into the cloche without having to deal with the glue. Make sure you put the cloche over it periodically, and leave space for the glass in the bottom cup. Once you have a good idea of where things will go, start gluing! I add moss first, then the tallest item, and then just fill in as I go. You can glue the glass to the base if you like, but if you have a safe place pets and kids (and partners) won’t get into it, it’s not mandatory.
Pick some oil you like to work with, whether it’s some you infused with herbs, something I sent you in the past, or just olive oil from the kitchen. Anoint the candle (I will be adding drops on the top and then pulling down towards me to try to attract), and roll it in the herb blend to dress it.
If the tea is cool enough, add some sweetener (honey!) and some milk if you have any, as an offering, then make yourself a cup to share as well. Light the candle and invite the Good Folk in and around your home to join in as you see fit. You can do this outside if you aren’t comfortable inviting them in the house, by the way. While the candle burns, hold the fairy stones and study them. Try to put all your focus on the stones. The way they feel, their texture, smell, look (please don’t lick the rocks), how much they weigh. The stones are thought to bring prosperity and good luck, so while you concentrate on it, think about what you are doing to add those things to your life.
Drink the tea and thank everyone who came, and put the cloche somewhere safe. Keep an eye on the candle until it goes out.
Have a great Eating Day this month! If you have foods you traditionally eat, I’d love to see them in the Hive House group on facebook! Sharing recipes is sharing love.
